For sale is an original signed museum-quality Magnum photographic print by the renowned Iranian photographer, Newsha Tavakolian (Iranian, b. 1981).
Titled "Portrait of Shirin. Tehran, Iran, 2010", this Magnum print (printed later) was a time-limited, hand-signed edition that was only available to purchase for a period of five days.
The work is signed in black ink by the artist on an affixed archival label, which carries the image’s accompanying text and is printed on Fuji Crystal Archive Matte paper. It is mounted and presented in an elegant dark grey oak-wood veneered aluminium frame.
Self-taught photojournalist Newsha Tavakolian has been documenting conflicts, social issues, and natural disasters in Iran and Iraq since she started working as a photographer for the Iranian women’s daily newspaper, Zan, at age 16. Tavakolian joined the New York–based agency Polaris Images in 2001; her work has since been published in international publications such as the New York Times, Newsweek, National Geographic, Le Figaro, and Time magazine. After covering the 2009 presidential election in Iran, she began working on more fine art and social documentary photography projects. Listen, a series of dramatic portraits of Iranian women vocalists, is one such project. Tavakolian conceived of each of these portraits, which include Untitled from Listen (2010–11), as the cover art for CDs that these women could not produce or perform solo due to prohibitions that went into effect after the 1979 revolution in Iran. Tavakolian became a nominee member of Magnum Photos in 2015, and was recognized as a full member in 2019. Her work has been exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. (Artsy)
