Still Life with Helmet Shell and Mexican Glass, Original Oil on Panel, Framed

About the Item

A beautifully translucent Mexican glass sits in front of a large Helmet shell in this simple still life painting by artist Helen Oh. The gleaming table reflects these two objet d'art as well as two more smaller shells. Richness is added to the entire piece by the intensely saturated teal backdrop. This piece is framed in a antiqued silver frame measuring 11.75h x 14.75w x 1d inches. Helen Oh Helmet Shell and Mexican Glass oil on board 9h x 12w in 22.86h x 30.48w cm HOH035 Helen Oh, b. 1962, Seoul, Korea For several years I have been painting seashells, both contemporary and fossilized specimens, some of which are millions of years old. That their designs are virtually unchanged from ancient times to the present points to the perfection of their forms and their incredible adaptability. These sea creatures live a mysterious existence, and after death, provide a vital service to humankind by transforming millions of their discarded shells to calcium carbonate, a key ingredient of concrete. Through these imageries, I hope to connect my audience to nature and issues of marine ecology. To enhance the design of these intricate forms, I painted from direct observation of them, set up before my easel. Helen Oh is a visual artist. Originally from Seoul, South Korea, she studied painting at the School of Visual Arts, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League. She holds a BFA in Art and Design from Columbia College Chicago and an MFA in Communication Design from Harrington College of Design. Helen has taught studio art courses at New York Academy of Art and the Linos School of Art in Umbria, Italy. Currently, she is an adjunct instructor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts. Courses she has taught include Painting Materials and Methods (oil and water media), History of Painting Techniques, Human Anatomy, Perspective, Drawing, 2D and 3D Design, and Color Theory and Application. The artist has received two Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grants. Her work has been exhibited at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, the Terra Museum of American Art, the National Academy Museum, and the Butler Institute of American Art. Helen's work is in the collections of Columbia University and the Americas Society in Manhattan. Her artworks have been featured in New American Paintings # 29, Art Scene Chicago 2000, House Beautiful, American Artist magazine, and International Artist magazine.

André Derain Framed 'Fish and Still Life' Color Lithography, circa 1970
By André Derain
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Original 'Fish and still life' color lithograph by André Derain. Lithograph printed from an original painting made by the author in France, circa 1939. Published by Mourlot in Collection Pierre Levy in 1970, Paris. Framed and signed in the stone. In good original condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina. About the Artist: André Derain (10 June 1880 – 8 September 1954) was a French artist, painter, sculptor and co-founder of Fauvism with Henri Matisse. Derain and Matisse worked together through the summer of 1905 in the Mediterranean village of Collioure and later that year displayed their highly innovative paintings at the Salon d'Automne. The vivid, unnatural colors led the critic Louis Vauxcelles to derisively dub their works as les Fauves, or "the wild beasts", marking the start of the Fauvist movement. In March 1906, the noted art dealer Ambroise Vollard sent Derain to London to produce a series of paintings with the city as subject. In 30 paintings (29 of which are still extant), Derain presented a portrait of London that was radically different from anything done by previous painters of the city such as Whistler or Monet. With bold colors and compositions, Derain painted multiple pictures of the Thames and Tower Bridge. These London paintings remain among his most popular work. Art critic T. G Rosenthal: "Not since Monet has anyone made London seem so fresh and yet remain quintessentially English. Some of his views of the Thames use the Pointillist technique of multiple dots, although by this time, because the dots have become much larger, it is rather more simply the separation of colours called Divisionism and it is peculiarly effective in conveying the fragmentation of colour in moving water in sunlight." He experimented with stone sculpture and moved to Montmartre to be near his friend Pablo Picasso and other noted artists. Fernande Olivier...
