Antique Victorian Cobalt Majolica Plate of Greek Goddesses Barbotine Revival

About the Item

This large and exquisitely detailed Victorian majolica wall-hanging relief plate features a striking depiction of two elegantly adorned Greek goddesses. Created in a vibrant Barbotine Greek Revival style with richly hand-painted polychrome detailing, the plate showcases a dark cobalt blue ground, contrasted by intricate floral motifs and gilded accents framing the central figures. Both women are dressed in flowing, historically inspired draped garments, one holding a mirror and the other a fabric, emphasizing a classical revival aesthetic typical of the late 19th century. The plate is attributed to a German manufacturer, with impressed marks including the numbers "1751" and "433" on the reverse. With a generous diameter of approximately 35.7 cm (14.1 inches) and a substantial weight of around 1245 grams, this rare decorative object combines artistic craftsmanship with a strong historical and aesthetic presence. Condition is overall very good considering its age, with some minor scratches and light wear to the glaze, particularly a small scratch on the nose of one goddess, as illustrated in the photographs. This rare piece makes for an exceptional addition to any collection of Victorian majolica, decorative arts, or historical ceramics.
