About the Item

This one-of-a-kind hand-painted ceramic wall plate by renowned Italian ceramist Gabriele Mengoni is a stunning work of art, showcasing the legendary Saint George. Painted in soft sepia and azure tones, the central depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon symbolizes bravery, chivalry, and the timeless battle between good and evil. Crafted in Gubbio, a city with deep historical ties to Saint George, the plate features a luxurious 24K gold lustre finish. The flange of the plate features reliefs to emphasize the reflections of the gold. This technique is inspired by the Renaissance technique of "coppe abborchiate," created by Master Giorgio Andreoli, also from Gubbio. The flange of the plate features reliefs to enhance the reflections of the gold. This technique is inspired by the Renaissance method of "coppe abborchiate," created by Mastro Giorgio Andreoli (circa 1465–1555), also from Gubbio. Saint George’s connection to Gubbio is especially significant, as local legend tells of the saint saving the town from a dragon, making this plate not only a work of art but a tribute to the rich cultural and religious history of the region. Additionally, Saint George is the patron saint of England, adding further layers of historical significance to this unique piece. As a one-of-a-kind creation, this plate reflects Mengoni’s mastery of traditional Italian ceramics combined with innovative design, making it a standout for collectors and art lovers alike. Its versatile design allows it to serve as a wall hanging or a centerpiece, perfect for adding a touch of Italian artistry and history to any space.

This exclusive ceramic plate is handmade and hand-painted in Italy following the original Renaissance painting technique, unchanged over time, which we observe to the letter: it is decorated in majolica hand-painted in duotone of black and golden yellow, showing an elegant decorative motif of the Deruta tradition which is inspired by a tile found in a local church and suitably reworked in a modern key. The wide brim, with a raised edge and profiled with a finely painted modular ornament, is characterized by an extensive decorative border band where the traditional peacock feather motifs are represented, decorated with delicate shades of golden yellow shaded with cerium white. Naturalistic decorations are depicted inside the large cable, arranged in specular and radial symmetry which branches off from a central hexagonal element and articulates around the circumference, forming elegant golden yellow raceme motifs that stand out against a black background. Our majolica plate can be used as a fancy centerpiece or it can be hung as a decorative wall dish...
