Early 19th century, Central Russia Vladimir's Mother of God Egg tempera on wood and Riza with orific embroidery, 53.5 x 42.5 x 4 cm This work presents the iconography of one of the most revered and famous Orthodox icons in the world: Vladimir's La Vladimirskaya or La Theotokos Medieval chronicles report that this icon of the Virgin by an anonymous Byzantine artist arrived from Constantinople to Kiev around 1130. At the behest of the Grand Prince Andrew Bogoliubsky in 1155 it was brought to the Cathedral of the Dormition in the city of Vladimir, from which the icon takes its name. first name. The fame of the miracles linked to the painting, already widespread for having saved Constantinople from the Turks, was further amplified when the painting was sent to the rescue in Moscow besieged by the Tamerlane hordes. According to legend, the Mongol conqueror was terrified by the vision of the Virgin surrounded by angels with swords and decided to retire. In fact, every year on August 26 the Russian Church remembers this event by singing: "It was not our warriors who drove him, nor our leaders who triumphed over him, but only your strength, O Mother of God!". Having survived an incredible number of looting and fires over the centuries, the icon is now housed in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Even during the communist persecution of the twentieth century, it continued to appeal to people's devotion to the point that the Marxist ideologist Maksim Gor'kij himself was forced to admit that Our Lady is in Russia "the invincible enemy of atheism". A cult still widespread today for a work that belongs to the group of Byzantine icons defined as the Mother Eleousa (Merciful) rather than "Our Lady of Tenderness." The most expressive peculiarity of this iconography is precisely the way in which Mother and Son embrace: the Virgin holds him with one hand pushing him to her and with the other indicates him as Savior and way forward. And the Child leans towards the Mother, placing his face on her cheek. With Mary who also becomes the image of the Church that receives the embrace of Christ. Moreover, the melancholy expression of the Virgin seems to allude to the Passion of the Son. The realism of the icon is such that it recalls the tradition according to which the painting was made by the evangelist Luke "live" on a table owned by the Holy Family of Nazareth, when the Virgin was still alive. There are many ancient icons, especially miraculous, attributed to the saint. But in this case a fifteenth-century legend reports that Luke himself, after making it, went to the Mother of Christ to make this icon blessed.
