About the Item

Molten glass mosaic on cement with its original steel frame. Signed on the edge and on reverse. This colourful achievement is a sketch for a decoration project of a school in Nanterre - Paris suburbs - Maximilien Herzele (1913-1969) is a French Mosaicist. Graduated from the National School of Fine Art, he begins his formation with Fernand Léger as mosaicist and with Max Ingrand as stained glass Artist. He retains these two modes of artistic expression throughout his career with monumental achievements such as the creation of a huge mosaic for the UNESCO Palace in Paris in collaboration with the painter Jean Bazaine. Beyond academic realisations in interpreting sketches from the great masters of the time he developes a more personal work of which this panel is an example. Close friend of Claude Parent for whom he creates panels and fountains, he contributes to bring a touch of elegance and light to the radical concrete achievements of the Architect.
