Set of 3 Framed William Morris Arts & Crafts Wallpaper Panels
About the Item
A set of three framed William Morris wallpaper panels in the Honeysuckle (yellow), Fritillary (teal), and Sunflower (red )patterns.
The 'Honeysuckle' pattern wallpaper panel was designed by May Morris in 1883 for Morris & Co. Although best known for her embroideries and textiles, May Morris also designed some wallpapers at her father’s firm Morris & Co. ‘Honeysuckle’ is her most famous wallpaper design; it was also one of the most popular patterns among consumers and is produced even today. May would have been about 21 years old when she created this pattern, and while she may have received some assistance from her father, the confident design shows an understanding of composition and color theory on the level of an experienced designer.
The 'Fritillary' pattern was originally designed by William Morris in 1885 and printed by Arthur Sanderson & Sons circa 1960 in a fabulous light teal green with mint colorway. This William Morris wallpaper pattern certainly creates a domestic oasis, but it also has a secondary, documentary function: though once abundant throughout Europe, the snakeshead fritillary pictured is now an endangered species rarely found in the wild. While the industrialism to which Morris was so opposed has clearly prevailed in the fritillary’s case, his design immortalizes the flower in print.
The 'Sunflower' pattern wallpaper panel was designed by William Morris in 1879 and printed by Arthur Sanderson & Sons circa 1960 in a brilliant red and olive colorway. The sunflower as a design motif became extremely popular in the late 19th century in conjunction with the Arts & Crafts and Aesthetic Movements, which looked to nature for design inspiration. In 1940, Morris & Co. closed and their woodblocks and designs were acquired by Arthur Sanderson & Sons, who continues to print the wallpapers even today. This edition of the ‘Sunflower’ wallpaper was printed in the mid-20th century and features a vibrant red and olive colorway, a far cry from the natural palette of Morris’s original design.
