About the Item
Boris Schatz Bronze Plaque In high relief, expertly cast bronze. Depicting bearded men on the floor of the Synagogue reading kinnot (sad poems / elegies), on the fast day of Tisha B’Av. This scene is titled in Hebrew: “Who will have pity on you, O Jerusalem? Who will bemoan you? Who will come asking you regarding peace?” (Jeremiah 15:5). Signed with the Hebrew initials of Boris Schatz, circa 1920. The prophet Jeremiah witnessed the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem and the suffering of his people, yet penned some of the most beautiful lines of hope ever written. In this plaque, Boris Schatz (the founder of the Bezalel School), invokes this powerful verse with the yearly mourning ritual that has been observed for two millennia by Jews worldwide, hinting perhaps that through his artistic vision of a new “Jewish Art” based in the Land of Israel, the final redemption of the Messiah will come, and with it, the construction of the Third Temple. Large Boris Schatz bronze plaques such as this are rare.
"Then the Lord said to Moses, See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all manner of workmanship - to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts." (Exodus 31, 1-5).
Established in 1906 by artist Boris Schatz as the “Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts”, Bezalel has evolved into one of the world's most prestigious art schools.
The name Bezalel is synonymous with more than 100 years of Israeli art, innovation and academic excellence. Bezalel’s unique strength stems from the numerous breakthroughs it has been responsible for and its ability to respond and adapt to cultural changes. It takes pride in its numerous generations of graduates, the spearhead of Israeli artists, designers and architects, in Israel and around the globe.
The Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design is, first and foremost, a group of talented, inspired and motivated artists and professionals. Both faculty and students are driven by a passion to create and by their dedication to quality and excellence.
These two pillars of the Academy have placed Bezalel at the epicenter of Israel’s cultural discourse and at the forefront of its artistic scene, making it instrumental in shaping the country’s cultural identity.

Austrian 19th Century Patinated Bronze, Giltwood and Ebony Wall Plaque
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
An exceptional and most decorative Austrian 19th century patinated bronze, giltwood and Ebony wall plaque signed K. Sterrer. The striking wall decor is centered by the wonderfully executed patinated bronze plaque depicting a handsome sculptor in his atelier draped in a flowing garment working on a bust of a woman resting on a stool while holding his hammer and chisel. He is standing on a wall bracket like element with an impressive open winged eagle above an acorn finial, a tied carpenter's square and a tied bell hammer with a caliper and fine foliate branches at his feet. In the background is a beautiful maiden also draped in a wonderful flowing garment siting with her legs crossed on the plinth of a capital where another maiden, possibly a statue, is standing with a globe and sextant in her hand with plaques, busts, wings and curtains above. The plaque is set within an elegant mottled giltwood frame with beautiful richly carved wrap around berried laurel bands with a fine angled ebonized Fruitwood border. All original gilt and patina throughout.
