Early 20th Century "Netilat Lulav" Bronze Plaque by Boris Schatz, Bezalel
About the Item
Massive bronze plaque depicting the act of "Netilat Lulav" that takes place during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. The plaque was made and signed by Boris Schatz, who was part of the Bezalel school of art in Jerusalem. Boris Schatz (Hebrew: בוריס שץ; 23 December 1866 – 23 March 1932) was a Lithuanian Jewish artist and sculptor who settled in Israel. Schatz, who became known as the "father of Israeli art," founded the Bezalel School in Jerusalem. After Schatz died, part of his art collection, including a famous self portrait by Dutch Master Jozef Israëls, given to him by the artist, eventually became the nucleus of the Israel Museum.
The scene depicted in the plaque refers to the act of "Netilat Lulav." During the holiday of Sukkot, it is a mitzvah to wave the lulav on each of the first seven days of the holiday. The proper time is in the morning — either before the morning service or during the service immediately before the Hallel. A meditation (found in the Siddur, or prayer book) is recited prior to the blessing (this has many kabbalistic secrets concealed within it).
