19th Century Oriental Ink on Paper Drawing
About the Item
Important framed 19th Century oriental ink on paper drawing
Ideograms were often accompanied by images of animals and objects, but sometimes also articulated compositions.
A carp jumping out of the water dates back to an ancient legend and is a popular subject in Korean painting.
Carp in early spring dive upstream into the river, along the stormy waters to its source.
Upon reaching a gorge with a waterfall, the carp jump out of the water to overcome the obstacle, but only one succeeds.
Just at the same moment thunder is heard, the carp takes a wish-fulfilling pearl in its mouth, turns into a dragon and soars into the sky.
The carp in the Far East is a symbol of perseverance.
In China and Korea, for example, the image of a carp constantly striving to achieve a goal was associated with perseverance in preparing for an exam and successfully passing it. Similarly, by placing an image with carp in the rooms of newlyweds, it was believed that the magical power of the image would help the wife give birth to a son who would be successful in life and career.
