About the Item

An exquisite early 19th century Grand Tour male nude drawing of an athletic youth. Signed Gennaro Gonzalez 21 December 1813. Why we like it Drawings and paintings of the nude, known as "académies," were a central component of academic art training in France from the 16th century onward. These studies were considered fundamental in mastering the human form. Only after demonstrating sufficient skill in anatomy, proportion, and technique were artists granted permission to work from a posed live model, marking a significant step in their formal education. We are absolutely captivated by this exquisite drawing. The phenomenal attention to detail is remarkable, and the model's features are stylised in the manner of Ancient Greek art, reminiscent of figures depicted on Attic and Apulian pottery from the 4th–5th centuries BC, as well as frescoes from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Condition The drawing is in its original, unrestored condition, showing wear to the paper, along with fading, yellowing, and foxing. It was lined onto another sheet of paper approximately 50 years ago and is now presented in a modern, glazed giltwood frame with a handmade artist's paper mat.
