Pair of Large Grand Tour Engravings by Pierre Bouillon

About the Item

Two exquisite and rare etchings of ancient sculptures by Pierre Bouillon (1776-1831), from his book Musée des antiques, published in Paris between 1811-1827. The two plates, titled Pupien and Pecheur Africain, depict the ancient marble statues from the Louvre museum. Both signed lower left Dessiné et gravé par Bouillon. French, circa 1810's. Why we like them Exquisitely engraved in the early 18th century, these prints perfectly reflect the essence of the Grand Tour, the artist's appetite for discovery, for the unexplored, for the exotic. History These plates are from the first and only edition of Pierre Bouillon's monumental publication on classical sculpture, devoted exclusively to the classical sculpture of the Louvre Museum, consisting of plates which he drew and etched himself, Musée des antiques dessiné et gravé par P. Bouillon. The first volume is devoted to classical deities, the second to mythological and historical Greek and Roman personages, and the last on altars, vases, candelabra, tombs, ornaments, inscriptions, etc. Several plates from this publication are in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Pierre Bouillon (1776–1831) was a French painter and engraver. As drawing instructor at the Lycée Louis Le Grand in Paris, he was a teacher of Théodore Géricault and perhaps also Eugène Delacroix.  Plates measure 52cm by 33cm (20.5in by 13in), frames 62cm by 42 (24.5 in by 16.5 in) Good antique condition, minor spotting to plates, in silvered wooden frames; minor chips and touchups to frames

  • Pair of Grand Tour Greek Bronze Vases on Marble Bases
    Located in London, GB
A decorative pair of Grand Tour bronze-patinated urns of ancient Greek 'volute krater' form,  Italy, 19th century. Why we like them We love the decorative look of these urns, evoking the Grand Tour travels of the 19th century. Perfect for lamp conversion. Design This shape was introduced in the late 6th century B.C. and was favoured by significant artists who worked in terracotta and in bronze. The earliest example in bronze belongs to the late 5th century B.C. and was found in a tomb in Agrigento. A characteristic of volute-krater handles is the fine articulation of the volute itself and of the lower terminals where they rested on the shoulder of the vase. Here, as in most metal examples, they assume the form of swans' heads. A pair of handles of this design is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Chiurazzi, De Angelis and Sommer where the main Neapolitan foundries that catered for the needs and tastes of the grand-tourists throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. They produced a wide range of fine quality objects, often using the museum casts...

    By Bernard de Montfaucaon
    Located in GB
We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely pair of original copper plate prints dating to 1719 by Bernard De Montfauucon of Paris. Dom Bernard de Montfaucon, O.S.B. (French: [d? m?~fok?~]; 13 January 1655 – 21 December 1741) was a French Benedictine monk of the Congregation of Saint Maur. He was an astute scholar who founded the discipline of palaeography, as well as being an editor of works of the Fathers of the Church. He is regarded as one of the founders of the modern discipline of archaeology Montfaucon was born on 13 January 1655 in the Castle of Soulatgé, a small village in the southern town of Corbières, then in the ancient Province of Languedoc, now in the modern Department of Aude. Other sources claimed his birth date is in 16 January, the most accepted date. After one year he was moved to the Castle of Roquetaillade, residence of his family. When he was seven, he was sent to Limoux, to the college run by the Fathers of Christian Doctrine Montfaucon served in the French army as a volunteer and participated in the Franco-Dutch War of 1673. He was a captain of grenadiers and made two campaigns under the command of Marshall Turenne, participated in the Battle of Herbsthausen and fell ill in Saverne in Alsace. Because of his infectious illness he made a vow to Our Lady of Marceille to give one hundred livres to her sanctuary in Limoux and to become a monk, if he was able to return to his country as a result of her intervention. After the death of Montfaucon's father at the Château de Roquetaillade, in 1675 he entered the novitiate of the Benedictine monastery of Bream in Toulouse. There he learned several ancient languages: Greek, Hebrew, Chaldean, Syriac, and Coptic. In 1687 Montfaucon was called to the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and he started to work on an edition of the works of the Greek Church...
