About the Item

This pair of images are signed Jose Del Castillio. The medium is pencil line work over worked with pen and ink then certain areas filled with washed ink by brush. The technique is masterful and very well conceived as well the command of anatomy and the stylish composition not to mention the background and general mood of presentation speak of a man very certain of his art and acceptance. The work is almost done in an illustrative style and even the slight touch ups in white wash to conceal over lay of line completing a ready to publish image seems to speak volumes. The artist appears completely unknown other than the name being Spanish no information seems available to place his work in any context other than the two images presented. Very graphic the totally common love between a male and female couple and between two women as a tryst involving sex toys seems dynamic. Both images conjure complete sexual satisfaction between consenting adults outside of traditional married life...catholic society especially. The clothing appearance and the general design of hair and room appointments make the dating of the images clearly to the 1930s. One work is dated 1935. The works are nicely framed in walnut simple frames with good linen matting making the images all important. The framing seems to have been done in the 1960s-1970s. Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. The works in good, as found condition with little to no apparent foxing and the inks and washes are dark and rich with no fading. Frames in excellent condition clean and ready to hang with only minor abrasions to the finish.
