Early 19th Century Drawing of an Officer of the French Army

About the Item

This drawing on blue paper is from a collection of late 18th and early 19th century drawings mostly made during the time of Napoleon as First Consul of France. This group consisted of drawings that ranged through officers in the army, Generals, Clergy and even Josephine before their crowning as monarchs of France. This drawing shows great style and is finely detailed. Note the hair and facial features all done in delicate and subtle cross-hatching. The collar and overcoat with military medals and honors are rendered as well in subtle shades created entirely in crosshatching as well as the illusion of a background. The drawing is set within a nice french matte complimenting the paper color and is framed in an old vintage frame in ebonized oak with a small gilded filet at the glass edge.
