"Nude Male and Draped Female, " Study for Painting by Dunbar Beck
About the Item
Always a master draftsman, this lovely drawing by Dunbar Beck demonstrates his mastery of the human figure, with antecedents in Renaissance and Pre-Raphaelite paintings. The drapery of the female figure, in particular, is strongly reminiscent of works by Rosetti and his contemporaries. Dunbar Beck was one of America's most accomplished and successful muralists, and he painted a WPA-sponsored mural in the post office in Danvers, Massachusetts, and a series of murals for the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair, among many others. He was also commissioned by Steinway to paint a series of scenes on a piano that the company gave to the White House during the Roosevelt administration.
