"Nude Pan Figure with Pipe, " Fabulous, Large Art Deco Mythological Drawing

About the Item

Artists in both America and Europe were fascinated with mythological scenes and ancient tales in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, and increasingly gave their gods, goddesses and other figures a powerful physicality and sensuality. This drawing by the Belgian artist, Paul Daxhelet, is a stunning example. Here he depicts a nude male Pan figure, his arms raised to hold the pipe to his lips, and his powerful torso and legs giving him support like the trunk of a tree. The artist uses waxy crayon or pastel to remarkable effect, and surrounds his Pan with an aureole that adds to his otherworldly appearance. Daxhelet depicted many figures from the world of sports in his early years, and later depicted scenes from East Africa, where he visited with great interest.

"Two Nudes with Columned Facade, " Art Deco Drawing w/ Male Nudes, England
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Beautifully drawn, clearly by an important artist, this depiction of two nude male figures sitting in the foreground of a columned facade -- perhaps alluding to the Classical sculpture of ancient Greece -- is not signed, perhaps due to the subtly homoerotic nature of the scene. The two figures have the solidity and gravity of high style Art Deco art, and may represent the academic, early work of a great master such as Glyn Philpot or John Craxton...
