"Seated Black Nude, " Important and Rare Drawing by John Grabach

About the Item

John Grabach, best known for his cityscapes and genre scenes, much coveted by collectors in America, was also a master of the nude, which this drawing amply demonstrates. This example is really a tour de force study of a man's back, since Grabach asked his model to twist his back toward him. His best known allegorical nude, "Resurrection," is a grand depiction in the Classical tradition, but he also produced a small number of superb nude studies such as this, and was the author of "How to Draw the Human Figure." Grabach painted and taught in Los Angeles and New Jersey, and was given a one-man retrospective exhibition by the Smithsonian Institution in 1980.
