18th-19th century, French school, the soap bubbles

About the Item

French school, 18th-19th century The soap bubbles Oil on panel, 44.5 x 36.5 cm Framed, 60 x 54 cm In this French school painting, with its leery and playful tone, but mother lovingly approaches her son intent on blowing a soap bubble. There are numerous details in the painting that hark back to the panorama of French academic painting at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The woman's rich and opulent robes, as well as the graceful pink lace parasol, are reminiscent of the elaborate costumes of Watteau's country festival participants, while the still life to the right of the painting seems to harken back to some of Chardin and Fragonard's models. Also recalling Chardin's painting activity is the iconography of the painting, which seems to echo The Soap Bubbles, from LACMA in Los Angeles. In Chardin's painting, from a glass of soapy water, a young man blows a bubble. Its iridescent, translucent surface captured in sunlight. The subject of the blowing of the bubble, widespread north of the alps as early as the 17th century, was an advocate of a moralizing message about the transience of life; however, Chardin's canvas and the works that, on its wake, address the theme in these terms, shift the register from allegories to the everyday. Chardin's interpretation of the bubble-blowing theme is often taken up by nineteenth-century French artists, as is also visible in Manet's Boy Blowing Bubbles from the Calouste-Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon.
