19th century French School after F. Gerard : mythological scene picturing Homere

About the Item

Early 19th century French school featuring poet Homer and Glaucus' daughter after Francois Gerard's work, oil on canvas circa 1815 - 1820. The painting depicts the time when Homer has been abandoned on Chios Island and found by shepherd Glaucus and his daughter Euplocamie who prevents the blind poet to fall into the sea. The original work by Francois Gerard (Francois Pascal Simon Gerard / Baron Gerard) has been exhibited at 1814 but the painter was not happy with his work and destroyed it. The painting is known for having been used for an engraving in 1816 by Raphael Massard, and a few oil on canvas copies like ours. Francois Pascal Simon Gerard, student of Jacques Louis David at first, became one of the main painters of early 19th century : court painter under Emperor Napoleon 1st, first painter of kings Louis XVIII and Charles X, he was also very famous across Europe. He became the portraits of all sovereign families in Europe (his nickname became Kings painter and king of the painters). Typical from Empire period, our painting is set into its beautiful gold leaf gilt wood frame. Large, very decorative piece in very good condition. Frame : 105.3cm x 86cm (41" 1/2 x 33" 7/8) Canvas : 91cm x 71cm (35" 3/4 x 28") Frame thickness : 6cm (2" 3/8)
