About the Item

JOHN MOGFORD, R.I. British, 1821-1885 "A Scottish Loch at Sunrise" Oil on canvas Signed lower right "John Mogford" Item # 109YWG10X A sweeping landscape view, this lovely scene captures the rising sun as it casts a golden hue across the still waters of the loch while cattle and farmers are ferried across. The layers of mountainous cliffs in the distance shift from greens and reds to pinks and purples as the haze of the atmosphere skews the hues of reflected color. Mogford's ability to capture the drama of cliffs is a hallmark of his work and it is well-developed in the present example where they are an exquisite backdrop, an afterthought that frames the scene and emphasizes the nostalgia of untouched rugged scenery. The little house on the hill is almost missed behind the vibrant burning autumnal hues of the tree grove stretching into the sky, but here we see a home with a view of the endless mountains and glassy waters while cattle meander in the opaque shadows below. Executed in oil on canvas, the work is signed in his typical script lower right "John Mogford" and retains an early Frost & Reed label with their title and inventory number verso. It is housed in an early pierced giltwood frame of very good quality. His work remains highly sought-after and is held in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Galleries of Victoria in Melbourne, the Sunderland Museum, Bradford Museums and Galleries, the Walker Art Gallery, Gallery Oldham, Guildhall Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In excellent overall condition. Linen is sound and wax lining remains sturdy. Surface is taut and with only minimal craquelure throughout. Original stretcher and keys. Frame is of the period, probably the first frame; this has the expected shrinkage cracks in the composition and gilding losses/inpainting/etc. Under UV examination, the fresh varnish flares in a few areas, spot of inpainting in the mid-upper-left sky, a few dots of touch up in the sky here and there, the upper left and right corners with some flaring suggestive of old inpaint/touchup. Overall a very fine presentation. Antique English Painting “Lake Nemi, Italy” '1865' by John Wilson Carmichael
By Carmichael
Located in Shippensburg, PA
The present work is an interesting scene for a number of reasons, including importantly its time of execution in 1865. It was during a period of his retirement to Scarsborough following time spent in Italy, sketching the major lakes and landscapes in the northern part of the country. Likely executed in his studio using the preparatory sketches made of the area during these travels, the scene captures an idyllic view of Lake Nemi during sunset. It is rich in fall colors as light cascades through the haze of clouds and strikes the turning leaves of the trees, casting long shadows along the meadow grasses. The blue waters of Lake Nemi are cool and reflect the landscape bordering the shore. The focal point of the scene is a family of three that is taking the day to hike the local countryside, breaking along a rock to enjoy the lovely views. The work is signed and dated 1865 in the lower right corner and the original frame retains a label on it from John Hay & Son, an art dealer, framer and gilder in John Wilson Carmichael...

Antique Scottish Highlands Oil Painting Sunset Extensive Loch Landscape Scene
By Francis E. Jamieson
Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire
Sunset over the Loch by F. E. Jamieson (British 1895-1950) signed lower corner oil painting on canvas, unframed canvas: 16 x 24 inches Fine quality antique oil painting by the much admired and celebrated British artist F. E. Jamieson (1895-1950). The painting captures this beautifully romantic view of the Scottish Highlands, with an extensive view over the loch waters. F. E. Jamieson (1895-1950) We are extremely fortunate to have been handling the works of the enigmatic British artist, F. E. Jamieson since the year we began art dealing, 1989. Over this time, coupled with our love of the Scottish landscape, we have bought and sold many hundreds of his paintings, in all their various guises and subjects and are considered by many to be a leading authority on the artist and his work. We are also in the early stages of publishing the Catalogue Raisonne for this artist, of which this painting will be featured. Mr. Jamieson was largely a painter of Scottish landscapes and loch scenes. Born in 1895, Jamieson lived on the south coast of England and was contracted to a large department store to supply them with his paintings. He was an ambitious man and keen to sell more works than through just one shop. In order to do this, he started to sign his works with pseudonyms other than his own name, in order that he could sell his work to a wider audience. It worked and it is considered that Jamieson at least 15 different pseudonym names on his paintings. In addition to selling through furniture shops, Jamieson would travel door to door offering his paintings to housewives and private buyers. In our years of researching the artist, we heard one story related to us by an old customer who remembers that Jamieson started selling door...
