Oil on canvas Framed Dimensions: 45.5 x 32 cm. Dimensions with frame: 49 x 35.5 cm. Alfred de Dreux (1810–1860) was a French painter known for his equestrian and animal paintings. He was born in Paris, France, into a family with artistic connections; his father, Pierre-Michel Dreux, was an accomplished miniaturist painter. Alfred de Dreux initially trained under his father and then studied with the renowned French painter Théodore Géricault, who had a significant influence on his style and subject matter. Dreux's works often depicted horses, dogs, and other animals, capturing their movement, grace, and character with a remarkable level of realism and detail. He gained recognition for his equestrian portraits, which portrayed horses and their riders in various settings, including hunting scenes, racing events, and leisurely rides. Dreux was particularly skilled at capturing the rapport between horse and rider, as well as the dynamic energy of equine movement. Although he primarily focused on animal subjects, Alfred de Dreux also painted portraits and landscapes, albeit to a lesser extent. His works were widely admired during his lifetime, and he enjoyed patronage from prominent figures of the era, including members of the French aristocracy and royalty. Despite his relatively short life, Alfred de Dreux left behind a significant body of work that continues to be appreciated for its technical skill, attention to detail, and emotive qualities, particularly in its portrayal of animals. Today, his paintings are held in various museums and private collections around the world, contributing to his enduring legacy as a master of animal art in the 19th century. The canvas is in good condition. The painting has small cracks, scratches, rubbing and small paint losses. Framed in a period frame which is lacking some gilding. This painting was Authenticated by Géraldine TAILFER-AUGUSTINUS - Expert.
