Antique Russian 84 Zolotnik Silver Orthodox Icon – St. Nicholas the Wonderworker
About the Item
This finely executed Russian Orthodox icon depicts St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, one of the most venerated saints in Eastern Christianity. The image is housed beneath a meticulously hand-engraved silver oklad (riza), made of 84 zolotnik silver (.875 purity), a standard used in Imperial Russia. The piece dates from the late Imperial period, circa 1880–1917.
St. Nicholas is shown in his traditional episcopal garments, offering a blessing with one hand and holding the Gospel Book in the other. Flanking the saint are miniature images of Christ and the Mother of God, presenting the symbols of episcopal authority, a detail rooted in Orthodox hagiography.
