About the Item
In our opinion, the masterpiece of Marcel Delmotte's long artistic career, this highly-finished surreal painting depicts four semi-nude female figures, one very pale and ghostly in the foreground, and three others clustered together in the background, highly stylized. The figures are shown at the juncture of truncated roads and bound by smooth, high walls punctuated by round arches, with twinkling radio towers in the distance. Showing the influence of Magritte, De Chirico and Dali, Delmotte balances sensuality and dreamlike other worldliness in one complex scene. His work was highly respected in his native Belgium, and four years after painting this piece, he won the Médaille d'Argent de la Peinture Belge, Le Premier Prix Chapman and Le Premier Prix de peinture Richard Dupierreux. Beautifully painted, probably in the 19th or early 20th centuries, this copy of the famed "Le Transport du Christ au Tombeau" painting by Titian (Tiziano) in the collection of the Louvre in Paris, was recently found in the attic of a Hudson Valley monastery. The Louvre original, considered an early painting by the master, dates to the same period as his famous "Pastoral Concert" and shows the strong influence of Gorgione.
