Balinese Genre Painting of Rice Harvest by Usman Munandar Bali 1984

About the Item

A genre painting of Balinese villagers in a landscape during rice harvest, signed by popular Balinese artist Usman Munandar, dated 1984. Munandar's work was particularly popular with more affluent tourists to Bali, before the 'Eat Pray Love' era of wellness tourism. He captured everyday scenes in popular locations, always delicately observed in a traditional Western landscape style, in oils on canvas. This particular view represents the Sidemen region in East-Central Bali, Indonesia, specifically within the Karangasem Regency. It's known for its beautiful rice terraces, tranquil atmosphere, and views of Mount Agung, which mountain forms the background of this image. What is remarkable about all of Munandar's work is his wonderful competence in landscape painting. Atmosphere and light are captured in ways that seem almost dreamlike, as if from a storybook or fairytale. Yet, when visiting this area of Bali, one finds the atmosphere is indeed like this - the light is shimmering, the landscape rich in every tone of green, the humid air 'holds' the light, casting beams in the thick air and softening the scenery with a luminous misted tone. Mundandar's works are becoming quite collectable - good examples fetch thousands. A great deal of old Balinese tourist market art was factory produced to meet demand but Usman Munandar maintained his practice as a trained genre painter of considerable skill. His works often observe moments of village life - women walking to or from fields and paddies, farms and villages studding a landscape of lush tropical foliage. They give a wonderful sense of life in simpler times, before traffic and mass tourism. The generic nature of his paintings makes them all the more suitable as decorative pieces. They're very easy to live with and provide lovely tonal studies of green color that fit well with organic modern and colonial style interiors. They sit particularly well with indoor plants.

'Beach Camp' Modernist Oil Painting Signed Anne Montgomery, 1984
By Anne Montgomery
Located in Melbourne, AU
Anne Montgomery has been considered for many years one of the women artists Australia forgot. Not any more. Along with the likes of Clarice Beckett and Lina Bryans, her work is now recognised as an important part of Australian modernism. The breadth and quality of Montgomery's work over a long lifetime has always been appreciated by other artists. As Australian women artists in the mid Century period were relegated to the fringes of the establishment, they freely explored their own vision and developed their own style. Montgomery's work richly deserves the attention it's now receiving. This work shows Montgomery's unique perception and expression of colour in the Australian landscape. Her use of oil on board gives her work a robust structure but the inclusion of ink sketching in the work gives it a delicate texture. Her foliage and grasses tickle, her fabric floats, trees dance - her landscapes are in constant movement. This painting depicts a family camping under canvas amongst the Tea...

Batuan painting evolved in the 1930s after a group of local villagers tested different forms with ink-washed paintings upon black backgrounds. These paintings often reveal Batuan’s cultural life, directly through their elements of line, shape, and tone. Meticulous design, craftsmanship, and strong visual impression are characteristic of the style. The painting comprise individual shapes which are painted in a precise and systematic manner that does not leave any empty space. The complexity of the paintings is inevitable as each of the strokes, lines, gradations, the characters or the subjects forms a delicate unity that finely balances the figure-filled canvas. Various gradations of colors separate different sections of the painting. The landscape is enticing and endless. About Bali Art...
