About the Item

Oil painting on wood attributed to Jules Dupré (1811-1889), a French artist famous for his dramatic paintings of forests around Paris and one of the leaders of the Barbizon School of landscape painters. Deep, rich colors, moving rendition of the French countryside. Among his chief works are the "Morning and Evening" at the Musée du Louvre, and the early "Crossing the Bridge" in the Wallace Collection Museum. His timeless, classic works form part of the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Washington DC National Gallery. Oil on wood, featuring a figure in a boat on a lake beneath a tree. A form of this tree appears in many Jules Dupré paintings. It is not signed, which is not in any way unusual for a painting of that period. This work is typical of the landscapes he favored in his earlier career, probably in his 20s. The painting is a very beautiful rendering of Jules Dupré’s subject of interest, this “favourite” tree. One feels drawn to the place and loses oneself in the feeling of the scene, as intended by the School of Barbizon artist. Includes exquisite Régence style giltwood frame. Painting measures 9" W x 11" H With frame measures 14 1/2" W x 17" H x 1 1/2" D.
