An oil on canvas, signed in the lower left corner and present in a period, if not the original, frame measuring 26.75" x 24" (frame included) featuring boat in the harbor of Venice, Italy.
American artist Lemuel D. Eldred (1850-1921). Eldred was born in Fairhaven, MA, studied for a short time at the Academie Julian in Paris and traveled throughout Europe,but he claimed he was self-taught. He exhibited in Boston and at the National Academy in 1876, and eventually moved to Boston where he kept a studio and he became a sought-after, popular marine painter. His work is represented in the Peabody Museum of Salem, MA, the Old Dartmouth Historical Society and the Kendall Whaling Museum.

Lemuel D. Eldred
Lemuel D. Eldred was born in 1848 and raised in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, near the whaling industry of New Bedford. He went on to become a talented marine painter. Eldred traveled through Europe in the 1880s and briefly trained at the Académie Julian in Paris before returning to Massachusetts. There, Eldred set about depicting New England’s dramatic seascapes, rocky beaches and quiet coastal villages in the tight, realistic manner of the Hudson River School’s second generation. He was close to the great marine painter William Bradford, who was also from Fairhaven, and the two artists frequently returned to the New Bedford region to paint. Eldred exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Boston Art Club, and the New Haven Paint and Clay Club. His work is now featured in the Peabody Essex Museum, the Old Dartmouth Historical Society and the Kendall Whaling Museum.

Most likely a scene of Nantucket harbor and presented in what could be the original frame with a slightly highlighted silver finish. Presents well overall measuring 16.5" x 20.5" including the frame.
From 1929 to her death in 1952, Emily Hoffmeier (1888-1952) spent summers on Nantucket, painting in the waterfront studios—first Harborview No. 3 and later moving to the Red Anchor Studio on Washington Street. She exhibited in the Easy Street Gallery, the Candle House Studio, and later at the Kenneth Taylor Galleries. After the death of Maud Stumm in 1935, Hoffmeier took over the direction of the annual Sidewalk Art Show, which she ran for the next eighteen years “with untiring cheerfulness and unflagging interest.” She was one of the founding members of the Artists Association of Nantucket and served on its first executive committee.
A graduate of Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachuetts, Hoffmeier taught art classes at the college for several years.
