Ruyter described his process in *Catalog Fodor 20*, stating: “I work with two opposing elements, forming a totality that is both static and dynamic. I call it concrete design.” This philosophy is evident in his work, where structure, material, and color unite into cohesive, dynamic compositions that exemplify his mastery of modernist principles.

Van Putten called himself a constructivist in the tradition of Vladimir Tatlin, with whom he shared not only aesthetic principles but also social commitment. For example, almost everything he made in 3D is made up of several parts; glued, welded or screwed together. In his paintings, which he often made prior to the 3D version, he even painted the seams where they would appear in the later work. Van Putten’s work, although easily recognisable, shows a clear affinity with artists he admires such as André Volten, Gerrit Rietveld and more generally with ‘De Stijl’. Yet he made no contact with them; he felt much more like a kindred spirit of German artists, especially the ZERO movement whose members, like himself, were strongly involved in society. Martha Hamlin Visser't Hooft was an artist and teacher whose family was deeply involved in the arts and sciences. Her father, Chauncey Jerome Hamlin, was one of Buffalo’s most influential civic leaders and planners, and an attorney known for his activism in museums. Her mother, Emily Gray Hamlin, was a social activist with interests that extended to the arts and philosophy. Martha Visser’t Hooft studied art in Paris in the 1920s at the Académie Julian, and explored exciting new European developments, such as cubism and surrealism, Russian ballet, and modern music. In 1926 she moved to New York to study briefly at the Parsons School of Design before transferring to the John Murray Anderson School of Theater Design.
She took several trips to Taos, New Mexico, meeting several prominent artists of the area, including Buffalo-born patron Mabel Dodge Luhan...
