About the Item

An original oil on canvas by Don Lemon (b.1913-2015). The painting depicts the Cutty Sark, a British clipper ship known for its speed and design, sailing on choppy seas. The Cutty Sark is at sails full, suggesting strong winds, and white-capped waves crash against the dark hull. Set in a double wooden frame consisting of a simple, light-colored gilt edged inner frame and a beveled wooden outer frame. The Cutty Sark was built in 1869 and was one of the last clipper ships built for the China tea trade. It later served in the Australian wool trade before becoming a training ship. Today, it is preserved as a museum ship in Greenwich, London. The name "Cutty Sark" comes from the poem "Tam o' Shanter" by Robert Burns, referring to a short shirt worn by a witch in the poem. The ship is a symbol of the golden age of sail and is admired for its sleek design and speed. Born Jan. 18, 1913, in La Grange, Ill., Dr. Lemon was a graduate of Northwestern University and practiced dentistry in La Grange for 30 years. A World War II Navy veteran, he studied painting and sculpting at the Chicago Art Institute. Upon his retirement in 1967, Dr. Lemon moved to Longboat Key, FL, and pursued a career in fine arts for 20 years; his paintings exhibited in multiple galleries. He was also a member of the Longboat Key Center for the Arts, a Division of Ringling College of Art and Design.
