About the Item

According to a bio written by Alex Bialy, "Daniel Schmidt adopted the name Dan Smith by 1890, when he began his career as a staff reporting artist for Leslie’s Weekly." The illustrator was known to have "developed an amazing facility and sympathetic eye for rendering animals, especially horses and bison, which lead to his becoming the “go to” artist for depicting horses and other animals in magazines, book illustrations, newspapers, and advertisements throughout his entire career. His animals were dynamic and graceful, often faintly stylized, and always recognizable as his." This Pastel on Paper mounted on Canvas is framed behind glass. The portrait is of a bob-tailed, dark brown or black racehorse standing beside a creek in a lush, tree-lined country landscape. It is signed in the lower right corner, framed. A plaque on the frame identifies the horse as "Sunshine". Image: 18.5"H x 22.75"W. This is one of two works by the artist in our inventory, and they may be purchased individually or as a pair.
