About the artist:
Black Joe Jackson (American, 1922-1997) was a self taught African American Folk Artist. Born near Atlanta, GA in 1920 to a poor share-cropper family, Jackson painted on board and used other available materials including house paint to create his art. Jackson was born dyslexic as evidenced by his lettering.
His art works are reminiscent of life in the black South, a half a century ago. He was a memory painter creating works that are truly fresh and honest. Jackson’s talent and original creativeness all express memorable and imagined events as he raised his family. Art works were usually painted on found scrape wood. Jackson was born dyslexic as evidenced by his lettering. A fine example of 20th century folk art, naive in execution, joyous in nature and radiant with color.
