About the Item
Ethereal and magical, this Mid-Century masterpiece is strongly reminiscent of the back stage scenes of ballet dancers painted by Degas, but with figures that are suggestive of Guy Pene duBois. The painter, John De Forest Stull who also painted the heavy frame depicts the dancers in the shadowy confines of their dressing room, but one young dancer in the upper right is bathed in a glowing spotlight, already imagining herself on stage.
Stull graduated from Yale in 1933, then worked with Ezra Augustus Winter on the murals of Radio City Music Hall before involving himself in one of two New Jersey chapters of the Works Progress Administration/Federal Arts Project. He is best known for his scenes of industry and workers.
