About the Item

Ethereal and magical, this Mid-Century masterpiece is strongly reminiscent of the back stage scenes of ballet dancers painted by Degas, but with figures that are suggestive of Guy Pene duBois. The painter, John De Forest Stull who also painted the heavy frame depicts the dancers in the shadowy confines of their dressing room, but one young dancer in the upper right is bathed in a glowing spotlight, already imagining herself on stage. Stull graduated from Yale in 1933, then worked with Ezra Augustus Winter on the murals of Radio City Music Hall before involving himself in one of two New Jersey chapters of the Works Progress Administration/Federal Arts Project. He is best known for his scenes of industry and workers.

"Dancer at Rest, " Large Painting of Half-Nude Male Ballet Dancer, Mid Century

Located in Philadelphia, PA

Large and striking, this painting by Robert Childers presents a reclining ballet dancer, clothed above the waist in a dancer's sleeveless shirt, but nude below, holding a pink ribbon and accompanied by three wire-back chairs. Enigmatic and full of symbolism, the dancer is facing away from the viewer so his expression cannot be seen; the three chairs with heart-shaped backs suggest that the man may be in love. Childers himself had been a dancer for two years; he also studied painting at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and Fleisher Art Memorial, all in Philadelphia. Later he led a peripatetic life, designing for greeting card companies, and creating fabrics, toys and illustrations at one time or another in New York and elsewhere.
