About the Item

Inizi XIX secolo Icon of the Nativity of the Mother of God Tempera on panel, 54 x 45 cm The icon in question condenses several scenes from the story of the Virgin, the representation of which within the compositional space, however, does not follow a precise order, so to speak, of chronology and succession. In fact, the centerpiece of the Icon is the group with St. Anne, St. Joachim (whose names are inscribed in the golden nimbus) and the infant Virgin in swaddling clothes, arranged within a monumental classical building. Below the main scene, however, the Annunciation to St. Anne by the Archangel Gabriel and the Nativity of the Virgin are synthesized into a single scene. In fact, we see St. Anne sitting with the Virgin in her arms and the Announcing Angel in front of them. On the outside of the building, which can probably be identified as a temple, the Archangel returns depicted, perhaps on his way to make a vow to the temple. Anna and Joachim are also depicted several times: Outside the temple at the bottom, gathered in a happy close embrace following the news of the miraculous pregnancy; but they also appear in the upper part of the panel, one on the left the other on the right, kneeling to pray to God in recognition before two blessing angels, who emerge from heavy dark clouds surrounding the golden Crescent within which God the Blessing Father is depicted. An icon depicting the Nativity of the Mother of God made in central Russia in the late 19th century is preserved at the Uffizi in Florence. Also in the Uffizi icon God the Father stands out at the top, and the various scenes are arranged within a large, articulated building. Related comparisons can be found in the icon of the same subject at the National Museum of the Carthusian Monastery of Calci but also in icons circulating in the antiquarian market
