About the Item
Emilian school, 18th century
Still life with hoopoe, frog and snake
Oil on oval canvas, 73 x 100 cm
Framed, 98 x 125 cm
The still life in question, which displays various distinguishing features of the production of the 18th-century Emilian school, is distinguished by a richness and liveliness that go beyond the simple depiction of inanimate objects. The artist was able to create a complex and dynamic composition, where each element seems to interact with the others. In the center of the scene, on a stone plinth, stands an abundance of fruits: bunches of grapes, both white and black, red apples, and pears, depicted with an almost tactile realism. Vine leaves, intertwining among the clusters, add a touch of movement and naturalness to the branching composition. But what makes this work particularly fascinating is the presence of animal elements. A hoopoe, with its distinctive red tuft, stands proudly on a branch, observing the scene. His presence, as well as that of the lizard blending in among the fruit in the foreground, infuses life and a sense of anticipation. These details, uncommon in more austere still lifes, reflect a naturalistic sensibility typical of the period. Light plays a key role, illuminating the fruits and animals with a soft touch, gently but, at the same time, firmly highlighting their shapes and colors. Skillfully calibrated shadows add volume and three-dimensionality to the entire composition. Our painting appears to be close to the manner of Francesco Malagoli (Modena, early 18th century-news in 1776), a Modenese painter, active mainly in his homeland and in the Mantua area, whom biographer Marcello Oretti, in the late 18th century, describes as an esteemed painter of still lifes, especially of "flowers, fruit ... and grapes so true as to fool anyone." The only chronological certainty regarding the artist's painting activity coincides with the year 1776, in which Malagoli contributed to the decorative apparatus of the Corpus Christi feast of Modena through the creation of two canvases bearing that date. Documents tell us of his works divided among the residences of counts and large landowners from Mantua and Modena. Malagoli traveled along the formative path of fellow citizen Felice Rubbiani (1677-1752), marking a decisive turning point in Modenese still life painting when he chose to abandon the overflowing lyrical compositions proposed by the Modenese master's line. Several works by Malagoli for a long time were mistakenly attributed to Giovanni Antonio Nessoli or the aforementioned Rubbiani as in the case of the pair of still lifes in the Museo Civico d'Arte in Modena and the one recently passed on the antiquities market in London. Also at the Museo Civico d'Arte Modenese, on the other hand, are three works formerly considered to be the hand of his son Bernardino Malagoli (1785-1859), who, however, never achieved his father's excellent formal quality. Cross-references with the work under consideration can be found in the Still Lifes of the Museums of Ancient Art in Bologna. Malagoli in the course of his activity also confronts himself in landscape investigation as in Natura con frutti now in Galleria Estense in Modena. Stylistic cipher of the painter is also the presence of little birds that, as in our case, animate the composition, as witnessed in the already mentioned paintings in the Civic Museums of Modena and in two still lifes in a private collection one from Milan, the other from Florence.
