Christ carrying the cross
Oil on copper, 24 x 19 cm
Framed, 36 x 30 cm
The image of this cross-bearing Christ obeys a devotional solution of Nordic origin and widespread particularly in the Veneto area, where both Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione give sublime examples of it within the first decade of the sixteenth century. In fact, the cut of the figure of Christ, taken up only in the upper part, the twisting of the face, the cross carried on the shoulder and, moreover, also taken up only partially, the pleading expression of the gaze harkens back to the iconography of this subject used by the Venetian painters but also by other Italian Mannerist artists, such as the Florentine Francesco Salviati, throughout the course of the 16th century. Although Italian models reverberate in this image, we can also find there elements more clearly connected to the Viri dolorum, Crucifixions, and Christs made by the Flemish masters of the Renaissance and international Mannerism; the lenticular rendering of the crown of thorns and the gold-tipped halo are, in fact, reminiscent of sixteenth-century models made in Flanders. The contamination with Italian and Venetian art in particular can be traced back to the trips conducted by Flemish artists to Italy, including Pieter Aertsen, Frans Floris, Jan van Scorel, and Anthonis Moor. The copper medium was typically used by Flemish artists, who were able to make the most of its characteristics to give their works those formal values typical of Flemish art: lucidity, minuteness of detail, enameled surfaces, freshness of brushstroke, and formal and chromatic pleasantness. The fluidity of the color, spread with broader, more enveloping brushstrokes, does not compromise the rendering of details, such as the drapery, facial features, hair, and beard, all delicately rendered with a slight chiaroscuro, capable of making the scene solemn but not dramatic and sorrowful like those found in the Flemish Primitives. It thus turns out to be a work well aware of tradition, but at the same time stylistically connected to new media and techniques, closer to the late sixteenth century and linked to international and foreign artistic experiences.
