About the Item

A charming and extremely decorative French 18th century Louis XVI Period Grisaille painting, signed M. Sauvage 1787. This stunning painting in various tones of grey, is set within a Giltwood frame with a circular bead and reel design spanning throughout. The painting depicts seven jovial seated cherubs playing different musical instruments including the triangle, flute, and trumpet. To the left is one cherub seemingly playing a Cello fashioned out of a balloon, stick and string. Grisaille is a painting technique where a piece is created using only shades of grey, or a limited color palette, to create the illusion of three-dimensional form and depth.
