About the Item

Gary Komarin (b. 1951) belongs to the generation of post-painterly abstract artists alongside such notable artists as Frank Stella, Kenneth Noland, Helen Frankenthaler and Ellsworth Kelly to name a few of this school. Post-painterly abstraction is a school of art that reacted to the so-called “painterly” style of the Abstract Expressionists of the 1950’s and 1960’s. It encompasses several different styles such as color-field painting, hard-edge abstraction and the Washington Color School.. The term “post-painterly abstraction” was coined by critic Clement Greenberg in 1964 who thought that Abstract Expressionism of the 1940’s and 1950’s had degenerated into a weak movement with time. According to him, the art form should restrict itself to those qualities essential only to itself and should avoid any associations with sculpture, theatre, music or literature. In post-painterly abstract painting, the focus is on the exploitation of the purely optical qualities of pigment with emphasis on the shape of the canvas and the flatness of the picture plane. Colors are vivid, bright and not layered. The painting itself is the object rather than an expression of the artist’s inner emotions. The whole movement synthesized elements from many prominent artists such as Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman and even Henri Matisse. It even borrowed ideas of Cubism, Bauhaus, and Piet Mondrian. It set abstract painting on a more purely abstract basis than before. It favored more openness and clarity as opposed to the dense painterly surfaces of Abstract Expressionism. Gary Komarin’s works are found in many prominent museums all over the world as well as in countless private collections. He has exhibited in France, Japan, Dubai, Zurich and New York along such artists as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Willem de Kooning, Jeff Koons and Joan Miro to name a few. There have been many articles published about his work in the New York Times, Art in America and Arts Magazine among others. He currently lives and works in Roxbury, Connecticut. The current painting “Untitled Black on Light Green”, acrylic on paper was painted in 1997. The condition of this painting is absolutely excellent. The frame is new.
