George Morland was a British painter known for his vivid depictions of rural life, animals, and tavern scenes. Born in London into an artistic family, he exhibited talent early and was rigorously trained by his father. By the 1780s, he gained fame for his warm, realistic portrayals of farmers, labourers, and animals, particularly horses and pigs.
Despite his success, Morland lived recklessly, indulging in drinking, gambling, and excessive spending. His financial troubles led him to produce a high volume of work to pay off debts. His health declined due to his lifestyle, and he died in poverty at 41.
Though his life was troubled, Morland remains a key figure in British art, celebrated for his charming and dynamic rural scenes.
