About the Item

GOTTFRIED SCHULTZ German, 1842-1919 Still-Life with Fruits and Wine on a Marble Surface with a Small Fly Oil on linen Signed upper left "G. Schultz" Item # 402UJE16Z An intricately painted still-life scene centered around a blown glass goblet of white wine centered on a marble table top. Red and white grapes spill across the surface with a sprig of the grape vine together with several large leaves resting on the top while peaches, a pear, two plums and an open apricot are laid out on the table. A single fly looks on at the table of sweet fruits and juices, its tiny body casting a faint shadow on the carrara marble beneath it. In the glass of wine, the panes of a window can be seen reflecting against the curved body. It is interesting to note a two things that caught our eye - first is the water droplets on the grapes and on the table top, a feature Schultz frequently includes in his still-lifes. And secondly the inclusion of a single spoiled white grape with its deflated and discolored skin front and center. Honesty in the midst of a tasty composition. In other examples, Schultz has frequently included grape leaves that have holes and browning on them or are even missing parts of their edging. Gottfried Schultz's paintings are quite scarce on the open-market, perhaps indicative of a low output by the painter. One of his paintings is held in the permanent collection of the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art in Florida (acc. no. P-042-92), a 10 x 12 in canvas featuring berries and fruits on a marble slab before a soup toureen. The few paintings that have shown up on the market over the years would include: Still-life of Grapes, Peaches, Plums and Hazel Nuts with a Glass of Champagne on a Marble Mantleshelf, 13 3/4" x 17 3/4", [Christie's, London, achieved 9200 GBP, 19 March 1993], Still-life of Red Berries, Peaches and Strawberries, a tiny painting measuring just 7" x 8" [Auktionshaus Zofingen, Switzerland, 16,000 CHF, 31 May 2002 - the pair to this painting, also measuring 7" x 8", was offered separately at the sale and also achieved 16,000 CHF], and a 7 1/2" x 10" example of Still Life with Grapes, Plums and a Peach offered at Van Ham Kunstauktionen in Germany, which achieved 4500 euros on the 17th of May 2013. Provenance: Wolf's Gallery, Cleveland, OH, lot 243, September 22nd 1990 Private Collection, Macomb County, MI, acquired from the above ARTIST Gottfried Schultz was born in Darfeld on February 4th of 1842. He studied as a pupil of J.W. Preyer in Düsseldorf where he would eventually set up his studio. He painted almost exclusively still-life compositions, almost always featuring fruit and local foliage along with servingware, goblets or cups. Little is known about the life of this meticulous painter, though what little authentic work from his studio remains is always meticulous and brilliant in its handling of color and light. Often his work includes an insect: butterflies, houseflies, bees and the like. Artist Listings & Bibliography: E. Benezit Dictionary of Artists, Vol. XII, Gründ, 2006, p. 807 Measurements: 19 1/8" H x 1 3/4" D x 22 5/8" W [frame]; 14 3/8" H x 17 3/4" W [canvas] Condition Report: Professionally restored by our conservator [treatment included surface cleaning, removal of discolored varnish, replace any missing keys, key out any slackness in the canvas, apply preliminary layer of traditional damar varnish, inpaint losses around the old tear, final varnish]. “Hen and Chicks” '1867' Antique Oil Painting by Andrea Cherubini, Italian
Located in Shippensburg, PA
An exquisite interior scene depicting a mother hen as she roosts while her chicks peck about the room, four feeding on the grain in a simple white porcelain plate while several gather to drink from a pottery vessel filled with water. The interior suggests the location is perhaps the storeroom or root cellar with a shelf stacked with garlic and a covered vessel hanging on the wall over the hen. The work is signed in the lower left corner "A Cherubini 1867, Roma" and the reverse retains labels from the gallery of Schillay Fine Art, Inc. in New York and subsequently an inventory label for Faultless Starch Bonami Company. The work has been professionally conserved and remains in pristine condition. Born in Rome in 1833, Andrea Cherubini was primarily a landscape and seascape painter, preferring to capture views of Southern Italy. A typical example would include Drawing in the nets, Sorrento offered at Christies, London in January of 2013, ultimately achieving 4375 GBP. The Benezit notes a few of his scenes as particularly interesting, including Seascape (1883), Eight Views of Capri and Views of the Island of Ischia and Surroundings. [Source: Benezit] Artist listings and bibliography: E. Benezit Dictionary of Artists, Vol. III, Gründ, 2006, p. 901; this notes the sale of four paintings, each described "Hen and Chicks...

Landscape Painting "Shepherd & Flock" by Pieter Gerardus Van Os circa 1821
Located in Shippensburg, PA
PIETER GERARDUS VAN OS Dutch, 1776-1839 Shepherd with Flock in a Pastoral Landscape (1821) Oil on canvas Signed lower left "PG Van Os f 1821" Item # 204GPP23A An extensive and brilliantly detailed scene, this fine woodland pastoral landscape highlights the ability of Pieter Gerardus van Os to manipulate light for dramatic and somewhat ecclesiastical effect. There is a certain other-worldly insinuation in the golden light as it pierces the dense cover of the leaves to highlight the shepherd and his flock as the focal point for the painting. Here we find the young boy entirely at peace on the bank surrounded by long golden grasses with his hat and staff tossed aside while watching the action of the small waterfall on the otherwise tranquil stream. His small dog stands beside him while the sheep graze carelessly, each showing total disregard for the two men and their dog hunting in shadows of the woods behind them. Across the bank a pair of unattended billy goats graze on the trees of the deeply shaded forest floor. There is a harmony and perfect sense of balance in this intricately detailed scene, an effective infusion of the transcendental into a quiet landscape scene. The work is signed lower left in his typical scrawling script "PG [intertwined] Van Os f 1821" and the back of the frame retains an early Christie's label. It is presented in a very fine carved giltwood frame. PIETER GERARDUS VAN OS Born in The Hague on October 8th of 1776 into the renowned Van Os family of painters, Pieter would spend his early years studying under his father Jan together with his brother Georgius Johannes Jacobus (Dutch, 1782-1861) in their father's studio. The three men had remarkable careers and would become some of the most influential painters in the Netherlands throughout the first half of the 19th century. Unlike his brother and father, Pieter moved away from still-life paintings and focused his work on rural landscapes of the Dutch countryside. He was self-taught in this pursuit, first as a copyist of the renowned Dutch "Golden Age" painters Karel Dujardin (Dutch, 1626-1678) and Paulus Potter (Dutch, 1625-1654) while also being heavily influenced by the landscape work of Jacob van Ruisdael and the allegorical landscapes of Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem. From his studio in Amsterdam, Pieter taught such notable pupils as Wouterus Verschuur...
