About the Item
This beautifully executed mixed-media painting by Boris Talberg (or Thalberg) was clearly executed in preparation for one of the artist's most famous works -- "The Gymnasts." Talberg depicts a tight clustering of three male and female athletes, and a close examination suggests that they represent discus throwing and tennis as well as gymnastics. Although this work solidly dates to the Mid Century period, the stylization of the figures also suggests the influence of the Art Deco era's emphasis on Classical form and symmetry. Talberg was one of the Soviet Union's leading artists in the post-World War II period, and he designed a number of murals and mosaics for buildings such as the Palace of Culture in Neftyanikov, Omsk. Dimensions include the frame; the image itself is 10 inches high by 7 inches wide.

Large and striking, this painting by Robert Childers presents a reclining ballet dancer, clothed above the waist in a dancer's sleeveless shirt, but nude below, holding a pink ribbon and accompanied by three wire-back chairs. Enigmatic and full of symbolism, the dancer is facing away from the viewer so his expression cannot be seen; the three chairs with heart-shaped backs suggest that the man may be in love.
