About the Item

Mother and child, on board and noted lower left 'unique and oil', signed "Hibel" lower right, board measures 23.5 x 17.5 inches, frame measures 28.5 x 22.75 inches. Born in 1917, Edna Hibel grew up in the Boston area and began painting at the age of nine. From 1935-39, Hibel studied at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts as an undergraduate, and later graduate student. In 1942, she was honored with the Sturtevant Traveling Fellowship to Mexico. In 1966, Hibel began pulling stone lithographs in Boston, which would become the basis of her works. In 1970, she began working with a fourth generation atelier in Zurich. An innovator of lithography, Hibel developed systems for creating works with up to thirty-two colors on paper, silk and wood veneer. In addition, Hibel developed the technique for "lithographs on porcelain" by successfully creating color separations with stone lithography which were then transferred onto Bavarian hard paste porcelain. Utilizing her "lithographs on porcelain" technique, she created a number of plaques that resulted in her "Arte Ovale" series. Much of Hibel's work focuses on sentimental images of children and women. As evidenced in her exhibitions "Golden Bridge" and "Peace through Wisdom," her later works, promoted peaceful relations between hostile countries China, Russia, Yugoslavia, and the United States, and earned her a number of accolades in her long standing career. In 1995, she was commissioned by the Foundation of the U.S. National Archives to commemorate the 75th anniversary of women's suffrage. At the ceremony, Ms. Lucy Baines Johnson referred to Hibel as the "Heart and Conscience of America." Hibel's work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in more than twenty countries including Russia, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, and the United States, and under the royal patronage of Count and Countess Bernadotte of Germany, Count Thor Bonde of Sweden, Prince and the late Princess Rainier of Monaco and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England.She received medals of honor from Pope John Paul II and the late Belgian King Baudouin, and received six honorary doctorate degrees. She passed away in 2014 at the age of 98.
