Horse Racing Scene in Impressionist Style by Otto Dill
About the Item
Otto Dill was a German painter known for his Impressionist depictions of animals, landscapes, and equestrian sports. He was a member of the Munich Secession, a cooperative of artists who sought to break from traditional artistic methods with whom he exhibited throughout the early 1920s.
He, like many other artists of his generation, traveled to North Africa to make oil sketches of the people, animals, and landscapes he observed, bringing them home as reference to complete ultimately larger, more complex paintings. Born in 1884 in Neustadt,
Germany, he went on to study painting at the Munich Academy with Heinrich Johann von Zügel, who encouraged his specialty of painting animals. From 1930 until his death in 1957, Dill lived and painted the landscape in his hometown of Neustadt.

The Kano school was closely aligned with the warrior class in Japan. The samurai, who lived in a closed and rigid hierarchical society established by the Shogunate, were drawn to the energy and freedom horses symbolize; Kano school artists commonly depicted the equine creatures as they are here, in unfettered and carefree family groups. China originally introduced horse paintings to Japan; the works typically focused on capturing the essence of horses in their various environments and often involved integrating human figures into the images.
