Italian School; Holy Family with St. Anne, 17th-18th century, oil on canvas

About the Item

Description Holy Family with St. Anne Oil on canvas cm 75,5x57 In the center is clearly distinguished the Virgin Mary, seated with a halo, looking at the Child Jesus, who is held by another elderly woman; most likely St. Anne, Mary's mother. Next to them are two other male figures: one could be St. Joseph (behind Mary, with beard and dark cloak), and the other, on the left, a possible St. Joachim, Mary's father. This composition is typical of depictions known as "The Holy Family with St. Anne," where the generation of St. Anne, Mary and Jesus represents a theme of spiritual and dynastic continuity in Christianity. The painting style shows characteristics of the late Baroque: Rich theatricality in poses and gestures. Loose, draped dresses with neat draperies. Accentuated chiaroscuro, with dramatic lighting effects. Idealized but expressive faces that communicate an emotional narrative. The work can probably be dated to the 17th or 18th century, consistent with Italian or Spanish devotional painting of the Baroque or early Rococo period. The subject matter, warm colors, and rendering of the figures are typical of religious painting of this period. Dimensions 75.5x57 cm Provenance Private Collection ■Condition Missing and defects.
