About the Item

Jean-Baptiste Olive (1848-1936) - Pomegranate still life painting Oil on panel A superb, delicate and refined still life painting by the Marseille master Jean-Baptiste Olive. The work is in excellent condition, measures 27cm per 35cm, in a beautiful frame of 45cm per 57cm. Jean Baptiste Olive puzzled as many critics and galery owners, as friends, fascinated by his dazzling painting of clarity. He made a place for himself in the lives and hearts of the people he met during his carreer, and had supports from many patrons. In 1948, 10 years after he passed away, the Cantini Museum in Marseille dedicated an exhibition to the Centenary of his birth, by presenting eighty two works from his vast artistic career. Olive settled in the unconscious of the Marseille patriots. His presence dominates the maritime landscape movement, one of the most encouraged by the enthusiasm of successive generations of amateurs. The children of those who built the modern phocean city , providing the arts and the artists with a little of their wealth perpetuates the memory of what Jean Baptiste Olive thought was the Golden Age of Provence. He would bond with Gustave Marius Jullien (1825-1881), Étienne Cornellier and Antoine Vollon. He frequented Robert Mols and befriended Raymond Allègre and Theophile Henri Decanis. In Paris, he participated in the decoration of the Cirque d' Hiver ( Winter Circus ) and the Montmartre basilica of Sacré-Coeur, and some pavilions of the Universal Exhibition of 1889. From 1874 he participated in the Salon of Paris and won several prizes the following years. He became a member of the Salon of French artists in 1881 and received a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889; The general Malesherbes bought paintings from him. In 1900, He received an order of two paintings to decorate the golden room of the Train Bleu Restaurant in Paris Gare de Lyon.
