Bodega I is a colorful and dynamic painting by New York/New Jersey artist Joel Adas, who works from his imagination in vivid colors. Adas is drawn to depicting coastal and urban areas where there is evidence of decay and of structures that were once used and are now defunct. The conjunction of nature and man-made structures figures prominently in his work, the result of living for many years in New York City, and now in Cape May, NJ. This painting consists of oil, acrylic, and oil stick on canvas.
Working in a free-flowing and improvisational style Adas uses loose brushwork to create abraded surfaces that enhance the feeling of decay to evoke the passage of time and the juxtaposition of nature and the man-made world. Adas’s work provides a thought-provoking meditation on time, place, and transformation.
Adas has shown extensively in New York, including exhibitions at the Beacon Institute and the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
