Late 18th Century English Oil Painting – Civil War Scene with Horse and Soldier
A finely composed late 18th to early 19th century English oil painting on panel, depicting a romanticised scene inspired by the English Civil War. A standing soldier, accompanied by his white horse and a dog at rest, occupies the foreground, while tents and mounted figures suggest a military encampment in the distance. The landscape and sky are rendered in rich tones, lending drama and atmosphere to the composition.
Executed in a provincial British manner typical of the Georgian period, the work combines narrative charm with decorative appeal. The painting is presented in a later 19th-century giltwood frame with classical mouldings.
This piece was removed from a historic farmhouse in Worcestershire, England, where it had been retained for many years.
