About the Item
Fabulous small Impressionist painting attributed to French painter, Louis George Eleonor Roy (1862-1907) either gouache or water color on paper mounted to board.
Roy was a French painter, engraver and professional printer. He taught drawing at the Lycée Michelet in Vanves, as well as the Lycée Voltaire and Lycée Buffon in Paris. Through his teaching, Roy met Paul Gauguin and Emile Bernard. He became a friend of Gauguin, who invited him to participate in the Exhibition of the Impressionists and painters Synthetists Volpini coffee in 1889.
Roy was also hired by Gauguin to pull impressions off Gauguins Noa Noa woodcuts for an alternative look to Gauguins’ own earlier prints. Besides his painting and professional printing business, Roy also contributed to the magazine the l’Ymagier and was an art critic in the Mercure de France magazine.
Gauguin painted his portrait which is in a private collection. Great small piece of period French art.
The original transport label is attached to the back of the painting. Signed lower right and attributed to him.
Found in a newer frame but matte appears to be older. This piece is attributed to his work.

- Condition:Wear consistent with age and use. Some wear to the bottom of the painting due to age...appears to have slipped slightly on the matte. Some slight aging to matte and a few slight chips to the corners of the frame. Otherwise good.
