About the Item

Louis VALLET (1856-1940) Side-saddle lady rider jumping a fence. The rider wearing period dress with a white polka dot veil. Watercolour signed and dated lower right - 1895. Size: 38 x 25.5cm Framed and mounted in a very attractive period moulded and carved, gesso, gilt and cream painted frame. The frame with unusual gilded scrolls to each corner. Some very small minor repairs to the gesso and gilt finish. Louis Vallet was one of the nine co-founders of the Society of Cartoonists in Paris in 1904 - he served as its first vice-president and later became its president. He resided at 46, rue des Martyrs in Paris in 1924 and is buried in the new cemetery of Neuilly-sur-Seine. Artwork: Vallet's favorite themes include contemporary military life, Parisian elegance, the eternal feminine, horse riding, and sailing. As a naturalist artist, he used oil, watercolor, and drawing. Some works were reproduced as engravings, particularly lithographs. Notable works include a poster for Job and "The French bed - 'It’s no longer a bed, it’s a parade ground!'" (1901). He illustrated numerous books, collaborated on various humorous newspapers, and executed costumes for the Odéon theater. Created posters, including those for the Job brand. Reproductions of his works are found on postcards. Commissioned as a decorator for the villa Gosset, known as Manoir de la Falaise, built from 1925 to 1929. Participated in group exhibitions, including the Salon du Rire and the Salon of the Society of French Artists. Honors: Awarded Officier d'Académie (Academy Officer). Holds the colonial medal.
