About the Item

"Magnolia, XVII" is from the series of paintings of this Native American flower by Kelley. Each one depicts the magnolia blossom in a different state of unfurling. John Woodrow Kelley (Tennessee, 1953) is a figurative artist who focuses on contemporary interpretations of the classical tradition and mythology. He earned degrees in art history and architecture from the University of Tennessee and Pratt Institute and studied at the Art Students League and New York Academy. Kelley has exhibited internationally, including a 2004 solo show at The Parthenon, Nashville, Tennessee and group shows at the John Pence Gallery, San Francisco; the Fischbach Gallery, New York, NY; and Pandora Old Masters in Milan, Italy. He has received commissions from the Morgan Library, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and Yale University. "Greek Mythology Now", a monograph of his work, was published in 2014. He lives and works in New York City and Knoxville, Tennessee.
