About the Item

One of the strongest Mid-Century portraits we have seen, this depiction of a young man in a vivid, emerald-green sweater was painted by Paul Zimmerman, an important artist who grew up in Ohio and Indiana, and made his reputation as an art teacher at the University of Hartford over decades. Here, his subject has an arresting face, with strong eyebrows, deeply set eyes, and chiselled mouth, set off by waves of jet black hair. The shadowy grey-black background clearly shows the influence of WPA-vintage painters, who of course were still active as muralists and teachers in the 1940s and 1950s.
