This highly decorative mid 20th century oil on canvas follows the influence of the early 16th century Dutch artists with its dark atmospheric background and vibrant still life display of interesting flowers and foliage which include irises., lilies, tulips, agapanthus. and large foliage leaves all displayed in a simple bowl. The image is beautifully hand painted in oils onto a stretchered canvas and displayed in its original swept frame which is in good condition but does show some light age related shrinkage cracks to the corners adding to its ambiance. The artist, Phyllis Kirch is obviously very well accomplished and most likely a professional painter who produced stunning images.

Possibly the work of Jean Esme Oregon Cooke RA was an English painter of still lifes, landscapes, portraits and figures. She was a lecturer at the Royal Academy and regularly exhibited her works, including the summer Royal Academy exhibitions. She was commissioned to make portraits by Lincoln College and St Hilda's College, Oxford. Her works are in the National Gallery, Tate and the Royal Academy collections. In the early years of her marriage, she signed her works Jean Bratby.
